toms and garlic progress

My window sill sown toms are doing ok. The stems have stretched a little long as they try to seek more light. I have put a white card behind them to reflect as much light from the window back onto them as I can.

They need plenty of light but at this early stage they cannot take the intensity of direct sunlight through the glass. I was reminded of this last weekend when the blind on the window was mistakenly tilted, directing the sunshine straight onto them. I found them all hanging limply over the side of their pots. I thought I had lost them but after a good water, thankfully they sprang back to attention.

They are now developing their first true leaves as shown here.

My garlic is coming along too.

I shall inter plant the space in between the garlic with a few spring onions and radishes. These take up little space, and grow fast. I have sown a few seeds going in paper pots on another window sill. The beauty of growing your own is you can go for varieties that are not sold in the shops. I’ve gone for red spring onions, and a variety of types of raddish.
