I realise it’s been a year since I started this blog, tracking my progress and sharing ideas on cutting back on every day plastic waste. In the process this blog has evolved into a baking and gardening blog, not by intention, simply because home made food and growing some produce at home helps to cut out plastic wrapping that many ready meals and shop bought fruit and veg come wrapped in.
I’m pleased that I have avoided so much plastic going to waste, and I hope that I have inspired family and friends to change some of their shopping choices at least.
But there is still more to be done. Meat, fish, cereal (other than porridge oats) butter and cheese are still hard to find without some plastic around them. I haven’t entirely managed to do without traditional disinfectants for some jobs around the home. Many potted plants I’ve bought were sold in plastic pots, same for my bags of compost. One of my gardening mags is still delivered in a plastic bag. I dont always take time to make the detour to Sainsburys to buy my cardboard wrapped ice cream, and end up buying the plastic tub variety in Morrison’s with the rest of the shopping.
Added to that most retail and electrical items bought for the home, and for DIY projects in the last year have brought a large quantity of plastic across our threshold.
It’ll be interesting to see if any of these things change in the year to come.
