potting on

Having grown their first set if true leaves I decided today to pot my toms on into a size larger pot.

I had sown 2 seeds per plug in case one didn’t germinate. Where both seeds did sprout, as I only have limited space to put them, it’s a matter of comparing the 2 and with a pair of scissors snipping off the weaker looking one at the base without dusturbing the other one.

Gaving done that, as they were sown in paper pots it couldnt be simpler. No need to prick out and transplant, just put the whole paper pot into the new pot and fill in with fresh compost up until the level reaches as close as you can to the bottom set of leaves, being careful to fill in the space between the paper pot and the new one.

Be careful also not to handle the delicate stem. If that breaks, it’s game over. If you must handle the plant do so only by a leaf.

Water the pots carefully, I like to water them from the bottom by sitting them in a tray of shallow water.

I place an old towel on my window sill to protect it from splashes before returning the pots to their position. I place a white screen behind the pots to reflect as much light back onto them as possible to avoid the growing stems stretching too much towards the window.
