Its time to start thinking about plastic bin liners.

I started using Morrisons Bio caddy liners, which say they are fully compostable within 12 months. The max size they sell is 25 litres in packs of 10 which work out at 25 pence per bag.

But the cost is an issue again. I prefer to empty our kitchen bin each night, and put a new bag in. That means spending over £90 a year on something that is being thrown away.

Online I have found a company called Caddy Liners Direct who sell a much larger range of sizes in bio bin bags. If I bought 100 of their 25 Litre bags that would be 20 pence per bag, and no extra charge for delivery. That could reduce the annual cost to just over £70.00. They also sell much larger compostable bags that would fit in our wheely bin.

Recently our local Aldi has started to sell bio degradable carrier bags at 6 pence each. They look to me about 15 Litres. The idea I have is to use them as kitchen bin bags after bringing my shopping home.

Other options I have considered but ruled out included not to use any bin lining at all, but as I don’t want to spend time each day cleaning out the residue left behind after emptying it, this went no further.

Another I considered was lining my bin with card or paper I would otherwise put in recycling. But I would soon run out of paper and then what? It would also still require me to spend time cleaning out the bin after emptying.
